Up for sale here is a fantastic piece of horological history. In 1951, Elgin was the first watchmaker to manufacture 50 million timepieces! Quite the accomplishment- and very fortunate for us that they commemorated the milestone with the release of this timepiece- the Lord Elgin in 18k yellow gold.
What’s very interesting about this watch is that the case lugs are not welded to the case like most watches. Here, they are mounted on a pivot, so that the watch contours to your wrist a bit more easily. At 40mm lug to lug, this is a large watch for the time period! I assume this case design was to make the watch more comfortable- as most watches then where mostly leather strap on the top of the wrist!
This one is numbered at 50,000,410- about halfway through the 1,000 unit production.
Comes on a nice lizard skin strap as seen (20mm lugs for easy compatibility!), and was just given a full overhaul.
